Rates of Setting Bail Over 2020

Judges set bail or remand in bail-eligible cases at significantly higher rates in the latter half of 2020.

New York Focus and Gothamist/WNYC's analysis excluded cases disposed at arraignment or in which bail was set at $1, signifying a mandatory hold beyond the discretion of judges. Bail-eligibility was calculated using a list of charges that were bail-eligible throughout 2020, supplied by the Center for Court Innovation. Judges who saw fewer than 50 bail-eligible cases were excluded when identifying the top ten judges.
