The Gazette and Investigate Midwest analyzed 12,509 monitoring results for E. coli that were collected from 2002 to 2022 between May and August of each year in Iowa. We counted how many times the results surpassed the state threshold — 126 colony-forming units of E. coli bacteria per 100 mL of water — each year. We only considered the first monitoring test administered at each beach for each week.
