Republicans' Views on Legality of Abortion, 1975-2023

Currently, 66% of Republicans say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances, while 24% say it should be illegal in all circumstances and 8% say it should be legal under any circumstances. The "legal only under certain" view has been the majority view throughout the trend, with a low of 51% (in 1993) saying this, along with a high of 67% in 2022. Views throughout the trend have been mostly in the 50% range, with occasional increases into the 60% range, including in 1979, 1997, and 2000 (63% each) and 2004 (65%). The "illegal in all" view started the trend in second place (25% in 1975), but after that, it moved into third place through the mid-1990s, with no more than 21% holding this view. Since 2000, it has returned to second place, with higher percentages in the 20% to mid-30% range (as high as 35% in 2009 and 33% in 2014) having this view. In 2019, 32% said "illegal in all" was their view, but that dropped to 22% in 2022 before rising to the current 24%. The "legal under any" view started below 20% (18% in 1975) before rising into the 20% range through the mid-1990s (as high as 29% in 1990), but it fell back to 14% in 2001 and has been mostly in the low double digits (10%-13%) since then. The current 8% reading is the trend low.
