A Seattle Times survey and reporting found spit hoods have been used in a medical setting in at least 27 states over the past decade. Fifteen of those states used taxpayer dollars to pay for spit hoods in state-run psychiatric facilities. In other states, there was no indication spit hoods are used because the state didn’t respond to the survey or because we didn’t find examples through our reporting.
