As Montana grows, the percentage of kids has decreased

This graph demonstrates the changing composition of Montana’s population in the last three-plus decades. At its peak in the 1993-1994 academic year, K-12 school-aged children made up 20.3% of the state’s population. Today, that number is 14.8%. Note: The grey highlight below shows when Montana schools received roughly $600 million from the federal government to help them respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, which helped offset declining enrollment. That money will run out by September 2024.
