Trend in Critical Views of U.S. Immigration Level, by Party ID
% Dissatisfied with level of immigration and wanting it decreased
Line graph. Trend from 2001 to 2023 in the percentage of Americans by party who are dissatisfied with the level of immigration to the U.S. and want it decreased. Republicans have been most likely through most of the trend to express this sentiment, followed by independents and then Democrats. Dissatisfaction and a desire for decreased immigration was a more universally held opinion by party between 2001 and 2008, with about 40% of Democrats, 40% to 50% of independents, and 50% to 60% of Republicans desiring a decrease. Since 2013, however, views have diverged, with typically about half or more of Republicans (and 71% currently), 20% to 40% of independents (36% currently), and far fewer Democrats (typically 10% to 20% but as low as 2% in 2021, and 19% currently) wanting decreased immigration.
