From 2017 to 2022, the share of middle-class new homeowners who are cost-burdened increased in all but four states.
This U.S. map shows the percentage-point change in the share of new homeowner, middle-income households per state who are cost-burdened from 2017 to 2022. The share increased the most in Idaho, Nebraska Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, increasing at least 28 percentage points. On average, the share increased 10 percentage points. Delaware, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and West Virginia all saw decreases.
