In 2012, the city was receiving more than $67 a ton for processing recyclables. Since spring 2015, Philadelphia has had to pay companies to take its recyclables. That rate is currently $78 a ton to recycle half of the city's recyclables. The other half gets sent to incinerators at a cost of $67 a ton.
