Opioid overdose death changes since 2023

Since June 2023, annual deaths from opioid overdose fell by nearly half nationally as of October and by even more in many states. They rose only in Nevada, Arizona and Alaska during that time; most states have data through October, but some are a month or more behind as indicated on map.

Deaths are calculated as a 12-month count each month as as data becomes available by the National Vital Statistics System including predictions to account for reporting delays. Louisiana and Pennsylvania figures include all drug overdose deaths including non-opioid drugs.
