The WHO is funded over a two-year cycle. Countries pay a mandatory contribution based on the size of their economy, and can make additional voluntary contributions. Around 80% of the WHO's total budget comes from voluntary contributions from countries, foundations and the private sector — most of which is ring-fenced for a specific WHO program or initiative.
