Nearly 4 in 10 of those out of work ran out of food in the last month

The latest COVID Impact Survey finds about 2 in 10 Americans say they ran out of food in the past month before making enough money to buy more. Those out of work and in low-income households were especially likely to report food insecurity.

Unemployed includes Americans who say they were not working in the past week because they were laid off temporarily, care-giving during the pandemic or were looking for work. The survey of 2,238 adults was conducted May 4-10 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
