Jumbo Federal Funds Rate Cuts Are Usually Bad News

It has been exceedingly rare in the last two decades for the Fed to lower the federal funds rate by more than 25 basis points outside of an economic crisis. The last time that happened was in 2002.

Prior to December 2008, the Federal Reserve specified a singular target rate. Since then, it has presented the federal funds rate as a 0.25% target range. The blue segments represent the high and low ends of the target range.
