Corporate use of carbon offsets has grown quickly

A review of 866 publicly listed companies shows how use of carbon offsets has grown. Companies can purchase carbon credits from projects that earn them, then 'retire' those credits, which allows the company to count the project's emissions cuts as its own.

Columns show how carbon offset use has risen from almost nothing in 2007 to over 30 million in 2021, and doubling from 2018 to 2022.
