Most of Europe’s burned area concentrated in 20 regions (NUTS-2)

Of the 186 European NUTS 2 regions analysed, just 20, mainly in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia, account for more than three-quarters of the total area burned (in hectares) during the 2015-2025 fire seasons.

Regions were identified by overlaying EFFIS burned-area polygons with Eurostat’s NUTS administrative boundaries, as EFFIS does not classify fires by region. The analysis covers the April-October fire seasons, limiting the inclusion of prescribed burns carried out mainly during winter.
