According to a New York Times analysis of state laws, as of May 1, 2024, abortions are banned in 14 states. Three states enacted bans that are blocked by the courts.
Abortions are fully legal in 26 states and the District of Columbia, 20 of which – plus D.C. – have enacted new protections since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.
Seven states have bans based on how long a person has been pregnant. Three ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, two after 12 weeks of pregnancy and one each after 15 weeks and 18 weeks.
Due to recent state legislation, Arizona is set to have a near-total ban on abortion in place for a few months before returning to a 15-week ban.
