Table 1: COVID-19 Deaths in Long-Term Care Facilities

NOTE: * 17 states began reporting data sometime after April 2020. Calculations for all states exclude the first week of reported data since the first week of data does not reflect a single week of deaths, but rather all deaths that have occurred up to that point. 4 states (IA, NY, OH, and WI) had major reporting changes after December 2020, so a percentage point change in the share of deaths attributed to LTCFs was not reported for these states. 12 states have not reported any trendable LTC death data, so they do not have associated data points & are included in the bottom of the table. See methods for more details. SOURCE: KFF analysis of state reports, state dashboards, press releases, press conferences, official state data from news reports, and the COVID Tracking Project. State population data is from 2019 US Census Bureau Estimates.
