In 2015, for every 100,000 residents, Virginia recorded 73 deaths from Alzheimer's disease and dementia. But the rate was much higher in certain localities. For example, Martinsville had the equivalent of more than 300 dementia-related deaths per 100,000 population. Rates also were especially high in Staunton, Galax and Lancaster and Northampton counties.
