Age-Adjusted Death Rates by Cause, 1999–2016

While deaths from most causes have decreased in the United States, drug-overdose deaths have nearly quadrupled since the start of the 21st century. These deaths have been enough to drive life expectancy to the first two-year decrease in more than 50 years. Drug-overdose deaths likely surpassed deaths related to diabetes in 2017.
