HISD’s New Education System schools saw sharper enrollment declines post takeover

Nearly 7,000 students who left Houston ISD last year departed from NES schools, which have the most intense intervention under the state’s takeover. This compared to just over 1,000 from non-NES schools. Meanwhile, charter growth slowed but still added 600 students.

Note: Schools are labeled as NES regardless of whether they received their assignment in 2023-24 or 2024-25. Students at district-authorized charters are counted as part of HISD's population.
