Leading causes of N.J. deaths

Since the outbreak in March, 15,926 New Jersey residents are believed to have died from COVID-19. That places the disease among the state's leading causes of death, according to a comparison of average deaths from 2014-19. With deaths in the pandemic continuing, they could top those of cancer, which typically records nearly 16,200 deaths a year.

COVID deaths are based on lab-confirmed and probable state totals. Other causes of death represent 2014-2019 averages.
