How U.S. corn production has surged

In 2005, Congress created the Renewable Fuel Standard — the law that required ethanol to be mixed with gasoline. In the years since then, demand and prices for corn increased dramatically - and so did production. From 2000 to 2024, U.S. corn production jumped 50%.
