Newly created National Defense Area in New Mexico

The newly designated National Defense Area below is more than 400 square miles, excluding state and private land. It's the result of a land transfer from the Interior Department that effectively creates a military base in the area in red, empowering federal troops to detain individuals for arrest by Border Patrol agents.

Within the new NDA is the terminus of the Continental Divide Trail, along with prime hunting ground. Even as Army officials tell hikers and hunters that the area is prohibited, ranchers who lease grazing land in the area are allowed to travel freely through an informal arrangement.
