Most councils in the North Island have Māori wards, which will now be subject to referendums

Hawke's Bay, Horizons, Taranaki, Waikato, Greater Wellington and Bay of Plenty regional councils have Māori wards. Bay of Plenty and Waikato are exempt from referendums. Hover over an area to see its exact status.

Environment Canterbury has Māori representation on the council by appointment rather than election; as there is no election in Tauranga in 2025, it will have to have a referendum on the Māori ward by March 28 2027.
