A Majority Support Stricter Building Standards and Rebuilding Aid in High-Risk Areas
Share of US adults who say it is a good or bad idea for government to do each of the following for communities in places at high risk for extreme weather
Two stacked bar charts show opinions on government actions in areas at high risk of extreme weather, broken out by political affiliation. Bars add to 100 percent, with dark blue for “good idea,” red for “bad idea,” and grey for “not sure.” For setting stricter building standards for new construction, majorities in all groups say it is a good idea: 77 percent of all adults (8 percent bad idea, 15 percent not sure), 71 percent of Republicans/lean Republicans (12 percent bad idea, 17 percent not sure), and 84 percent of Democrats/lean Democrats (about 4 percent bad idea, 12 percent not sure). For providing financial assistance for people to rebuild, support is lower but still a majority: 64 percent of all adults (15 percent bad idea, 21 percent not sure), 61 percent of Republicans/lean Republicans (19 percent bad idea, 20 percent not sure), and 67 percent of Democrats/lean Democrats (12 percent bad idea, 21 percent not sure).
