Canadian population growth by type, Jul. 1972 - Jun. 2023

Between the summers of 2022 and 2023, the number of non-permanent residents in Canada rose by nearly 700,000; the largest increase of its kind in five decades of available data.

Net flows are estimates calculated by subtracting decreases (net emigration, outgoing NPRs) from increases (new immigrants, incoming NPRs). Totals for 2022/23 are preliminary. NPR data for 2022 and 2023 are counted through an updated methodology (which in 2021/22, for example, produced a net NPR change of 196K, compared to 205K under the older methodology).
