Most Texas colleges and universities fall short of the recommended number of counselors

Of the 23 colleges and universities that provided data on their counseling center staffing and use, six meet the guidelines established by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS).

IACS guidelines recommend campuses maintain minimum staffing ratios of one full-time professional staff member to every 1,000 to 1,500 students, depending on services offered and other campus mental health agencies. For this report, Texas Community Health News considered a campus to meet these guidelines if they report having more than one counselor for every 1,500 students or if they would need to hire less than one counselor to meet this threshold.
