How Much Taxpayers Pay Into Public Pension Plans

Here are selected public pension plans. In some states, workers match taxpayer contributions dollar for dollar for their pensions. In others, such as Pennsylvania, taxpayers pick up more of the tab.

Numbers in billions. Totals may not add up due to rounding.

*The higher the number, the more taxpayers contribute to pensions, compared to employee payroll deductions. When the number is 1, taxpayers and employees are paying equally.
