Texas' eighth grade math performance has declined since 2015

Mike Morath's tenure began in 2016. On the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), Texas dropped to 34th in eighth grade math, with its average score falling three points below national average. The ranking marked an all-time low, according to Texas 2036. The average score was the lowest since 1992.

Note: A sample of students take the main NAEP exams every two years. The 2021 test was postponed due to COVID-19. Results from the 2026 assessments will release next year.
