Ageing Asia

The Asia-Pacific is greying at a rapid clip, albeit at varying speeds. The Straits Times looks at the shifts in the size of populations aged 65 and above through the decades for 12 economies in the region. The United Nations defines a country as “ageing” if its proportion share of people aged 65 and above is 7 per cent, “aged” when it is 14 per cent or more, and “super-aged” if it exceeds 20 per cent.

NOTES:
• Historical figures are from UN data, while future projections are the UN's median forecasts.
• The figures reflect the percentage of those aged 65 and above among the total population (including citizens and permanent residents), and may differ from data by respective governments.
