Maryland on track to build fewest new housing units since Great Recession

The number of permits for new housing exploded in 2022, driven largely by apartment and condo buildings. Permit issuance has plummeted since then.

The Census Bureau collects local data on new privately owned residential construction through its Building Permits Survey. Permits come at the beginning of the construction process, and not every permit leads to a finished unit.
