Ransomware growth in the U.S.

According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, the number of victims reporting ransomware attacks has declined in recent years though there was an increase in 2019. However, the amount demanded -- and paid -- is on the rise, with the average ransom in 2019 growing more than six fold from 2015. Attackers are more selective and going after larger companies that likely will pay but not the IT staff to handle a recovery. The losses do not include business losses (such as wages, files, third-party remediation). The FBI said not all victims reported the actual loss so the amounts could be low.
