Amid the pandemic, N.J. deaths have skyrocketed

As coronavirus has battered the state, far more residents have died in the past three months than is typical, provisional state mortality figures show. Excess deaths peaked in April, but have continued in the first three weeks of May, when 1,403 more people died than would be expected.

Averages are based on deaths in 2015-2019.
