Sewage sludge is the sludge generated after sewage treatment of industrial or municipal wastewater while faecal sludge is the sludge from pit latrines or other onsite sanitation system. Septage sludge is, in essence, septic tank sludge and is partially treated over a period of time. There is a wide gap between the amount of excreta produced and our existing capacity to process it in urban India. The United Nations, in a report on water access and sanitation in India released in 2015, says that an estimated 65,000 tonnes of uncovered, untreated faeces get introduced in the environment in India every day.
