Erie County's huge surpluses fall from Covid pandemic highs

Erie County anticipates a roughly $33 million surplus for 2023, which would be good for a normal year, but represents the lowest annual surplus in years.

The 2020 year-end surplus was initially $1.1 million, but withheld state grant money was eventually released that retroactively brought the surplus up to roughly $140 million. 2023 surplus figure is still an estimate.
