Researchers created a simple tool to determine whether presidents increased or reduced diversity of the federal courts with the judges they appointed to the bench. When white male judges are replaced by a white woman or a Black man, judicial diversity increases by one point. When white male judges are replaced by a woman of color, judicial diversity increases by two points. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama most diversified the courts. Trump and Reagan appointed the fewest women and people of color as federal judges.
