Investigations into fatal police shootings of unarmed people surpassed legal limits for prosecution for most crimes, and others are drawing close

As of June 10, six investigations into fatal police shootings of unarmed people remain unresolved more than three years after being opened.

The three-year statute of limitations applies to de-certifying a police officer and to most criminal charges, like involuntary manslaughter, but does not apply to charges that would exceed eight years in prison or charges like murder that have no statute of limitations.
