The retirement access gap across the workforce

Share of workers who lack employer-provided access to a retirement plan, by worker characteristic. Employed workers ages 18–64, December 2024.

“Lacking access” means the worker lacks employer-provided access to a qualifying plan (one the employer offers and the worker is eligible for); the self-employed are counted as lacking employer access by construction. Lacking-access rate is the share within each group. Share of all workers and share of total gap are shares of the full population and may not sum to 100 percent within a characteristic because a few workers do not report it.
