Nationwide Rural Maternity Program Bypasses South

A federal grant program aimed at improving access and care for rural mothers has bypassed the South. Black women, who die at nearly three times the rate of white women during and soon after pregnancy, are more likely to live in rural areas of Southeastern states.

Note: Program awards were paused in 2020.
