Average Retirement Savings Balance, by Age

Bars show the median balance among people in each age group who report having retirement accounts. People with no accounts are not included.

The Fed's definition of retirement accounts includes individual retirement accounts, such as traditional and Roth IRAs, as well as workplace plans such as 401(k)s and pensions. It does not include general savings or brokerage accounts.
