Figure 1.4.4: Bicyclist Fatality Rates Per Capita and Per Bicycle Commuter
The year 2022 had the highest rate of bicyclist fatalities per capita and the second highest rate of bicyclist fatalities per bike commuter since data on bicycle commuting became available through the American Community Survey. In 2022, the estimate for the number of bicycle commuters increased by over 100,000 commuters, offsetting record reported bicyclist deaths.
Bicyclist fatalities per million people and per 10,000 bicycle commuters, from 2007 to 2022. Rates for both have been steadily increasing over the past decade, reaching a recorded high per capita in 2022.
