What's the difference? An expungement is the removal of a criminal charge and/or conviction from someone's publicly searchable criminal record. A pardon is the way the state forgives all the legal consequences of a crime, including restoring civil rights and ending parole, after a convict has served his time and paid restitution. Unlike expungement, pardons do not clear convictions from criminal records.
