River combat involving Union gunboats, 1861-1865

During the Civil War, Union gunboats were active well beyond featuring in key battles. There were hundreds of separate incidents in the Mississippi River basin in which Union gunboats attacked a target, southerners shot at a federal boat, or there was a mutual fight.
