In which states is Covid-19 getting out of control (as of June 26th)?

The states with the highest number of new cases per 100K population last week (June 20-26) are seen at right of the chart -- Arizona had the highest number, followed by Florida and South Carolina. Note that all eleven states with more than 100 new cases per 100K voted Republican in the 2016 presidential election.  States with the fastest-growing week-over-week increases are seen at the top of the chart, and included Missouri, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.

NOT SHOWN (off the chart): Mississippi (148/185%), Idaho (66/154%), and Vermont (9/116%). HOW TO READ: Mouse over state bubbles to see state name and key statistics. States furthest to the right had the highest rates of new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population last week. States at the top of the chart had the fastest growth rate in new cases (comparing last week to the week before). Size of bubble indicates population of state. Color of bubble indicates 2016 presidential election result in state.  DANGER ZONE: When hospital systems were starting to fail in certain parts of certain states in March and April (i.e., ICU beds full and corpses piling up), those states were seeing about 150 new cases per 100K pop. per week.(Caveat: Less testing of the general population was being done at the time, so the corresponding danger # of new cases per week may be higher today..
