Income Eligibility Limits for Pregnant Individuals in Medicaid and CHIP

This table displays each state's upper income limit for Medicaid and CHIP eligibility for pregnant individuals as a percentage of the federal poverty level (FPL). The table also indicates whether states have elected to use CHIP to cover additional pregnant individuals, and to what eligibility limit.

States may elect to offer full-benefit CHIP coverage for pregnant individuals once they raise pregnancy Medicaid income eligibility to at least 185% FPL. States highlighted in red have not yet met this threshold.

National median eligibility is 200% FPL for Medicaid, 258% FPL for CHIP, and 218% FPL for the Unborn Child Option (CHIP-funded).

Updated March 2023
¹Virginia uses a Section 1115 Demonstration to cover pregnant people in CHIP at lower incomes than in Medicaid in other states.

Notes: January 2023 income limits reflect Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI)-converted income standards and include a disregard equal to five percentage points of the federal poverty level (FPL). The FPL for a family of three is $24,860 as of January 2023.
