All told, 26 states have their governors appoint/nominate judges to the highest court's bench. Of these, four allow the governor to select an appointee/nominee without the help of a nominating commission. Five states require the judge to be confirmed by the State Senate; one (N.H.) requires confirmation by the nominating commission.
