Gender pay gaps in the formal and informal economy

Globally, women in the informal economy earn less than half of what men in the formal economy earn.

Notes: Monthly wage of men in formal wage employment as a reference (=1). Global estimates based on data from 92 countries representing 81% of global employment (66% of total employment in developing countries, 87% in emerging countries and 65% in developed countries). Applies the harmonized ILO definition of informal employment (see Women and men in the informal economy: A statistical picture (ILO, 2018), box 2).
