Fatality spike

Monthly fatalities, 2015-2020.

Russia recorded more than 55,000 extra deaths compared to the average over the preceding five years in May, June and July 2020. This is despite the fact that monthly mortality rates have anyway been trending downwards, and were running at their lowest level in a decade during the first three months of the year.

Figures include Crimea and Sevastopol, which were added to Russia's official population statistics in January 2015. Excess deaths in May and June also came in significantly above the 10-year average after excluding the effect of the annexation of Crimea on Russia's population (an addition of 2.6 million) and, correspondingly, monthly deaths.
