State Money for Higher Ed Continues Slow Climb From Recession's Depths

Total state appropriations for higher education increased by just over 4 percent for the 48 states that have passed a budget for this fiscal year. The figures do not include data from Illinois and Pennsylvania, where lawmakers have yet to approve spending bills for the current budget cycle. Over the past five years, total state dollars for colleges have increased more than 7 percent, though there are wide variations among the states.
