Average student loans are relatively low in Texas compared to U.S.

Though Texas has the second-highest federal loan deficit in the U.S., borrowers owe about $33,750 on average -- about $5,000 lower than the national average. By comparison, borrowers in the District of Columbia have the highest average student loans at almost $55,000.
