China overtook the U.S. as the world's largest auto market in 2009. But new auto sales have been dropping fast in China as consumers pull back on big-ticket purchases. American car buyers out-bought their Chinese counterparts in May, July and August this year. Most Chinese consumers pay cash for their cars while most Americans finance their purchases with credit.
